  • High Jump

After witnessing the men's high jump at USATF nationals, I'd have to say the Olympic trials are particularly up for grabs next July. I know. It's early, and there are several seasoned vets in the mix, but...
There is a seldom mentioned/seen high jumper out of UF who looked fit and mighty impressive at the SECs indoors in March with a leap of 226 m...well over the bar too. My understanding is that he is 6'0" 170, very lean, athletic, and strong...had a disappointing NCs after having a solid indoor season throughout...sat out the outdoor season. Did anyone see him jump at the SECs? What did you think? I understand that he is very competitive, not easily intimidated by the competiton, and can grab an audience with charisma...good be a surprise darkhorse. I believe his name is Joe Squittieri.

You do know, of course, that he 'left' the team in mid-season. It was very mutual, I understand. If you read between the lines, you'll see why a talented athlete like Squitteri leaves. Ricky Harris is gone now as well. New coach - spring cleaning.

Sorry for the two typos - it's Squittieri and Rickey H.

        Re: High Jump

From what I have learned, Squittieri left the team at the end of indoor NCs and before the Florida Relays at the beginning of the outdoor season in March. I have been told that he has met with his coaches, is planning to return to the team next year and, in fact, has resumed training this summer with a focus on the Olympic trials for which he is already a "B" qualifier based on his jump of 226 m at the indoor SECs. I know all about rumors, but I do not believe that there was a problem between Squittieri and his coaches leading up to his leaving the team. In fact, I believe that he was a team captain and respected by his coaches...kind of a surprise thing rather than a lingering one.
