.... I'm motivated to note that the next time some English type wants to get all raggy wanting to know why T&FN doesn't go all-metric I'll have this riposte: why does the courtside clock at Wimbledon measure serves in miles per hour?

I think they're just trying to keep up with the state of the art technology at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, where the scoreboard shows the speed of each pitch in miles per hour.

Its not because they think the American viewing public is one dimensional and have trouble converting klm to mph.
The Radar gun is made by IMB in the US, that is the output of the devise.

Wimbeldon draws constant criticism for being pointlessly backwards and ridiculously resistant to change. Careful which traits of what establishments you choose to prefer to emulate.

Wimbledon Tennis ranks right there with World Cup Soccer. You can take them both and pitch them in the dumper.

You're right, Scott. My British friends agree that neither Wimbledon nor the soccer World Cup can approach the excitement of the Mt. SAC Relays.

Question for your UK chums: Is their excitement contingent upon whether the serves and goal shots are measured in m/h or km/h?

                  What's the definition of useless?

A device that measures the speed in goal shots in soccer. That puppy gets a lot of use in your typical high-powered South Korea vs. North Yemen nil-nil tie.

The comedian Steven Wright once wondered if, in Europe, the jazz trumpeter Miles Davis would be known as Kilometers Davis.

I never understand why Americans can so easily dismiss soccer when it's the MOST POPULAR sport in the world. Are all those billions of fans really that stupid, or perhaps is it that they understand the game better than we do and appreciate the nuances that are completely lost on most of us? Usually we merely show our own ignorance in our criticism.

Most of my life soccer devotees have crammed the nuances and complexity of soccer down my throat as thought there is nothing stupid about me if I didn't get "it". In the end it's still kick-ball without the benefit of bases.

Think about what the masses consume culturally and then answer your own question.

I guess what I meant to say was why must Americans be so critical of others. Can't we just say, "I don't like soccer because I don't understand it, but I'm sure it's a great game if you do understand it." Baseball and American football look even odder to the rest of the world and they just accept that we like them. Viva la difference? (probably spelled wrong)
