It's popular because third-world peoples can play it without any facilities or equipment (and not even a real ball). If I want "nuance"in a sporting event I'll watch a chess match.

Before you get too proud of yourself, remember that Robert Frost wrote "The Road Not Taken" to apply to EVERYONE. We are all eccentric, but the less 'elitist' of us recognize the equal worth of all our fellow creatures and try not to look down our noses at them.

I'm talking about mass consumption of all forms and the above posts just make my point. The minute the masses start to think that track and field is the greatest thing going, I'll get nervous and wonder what has been done to it. It's all just modern day christians vs the lions. Personally, I'd rather have eccentric interests that very few others have.

I guess what I meant to say was why must Americans be so critical of others. Can't we just say, "I don't like soccer because I don't understand it, but I'm sure it's a great game if you do understand it." Baseball and American football look even odder to the rest of the world and they just accept that we like them. Viva la difference? (probably spelled wrong)

Most of my life soccer devotees have crammed the nuances and complexity of soccer down my throat as thought there is nothing stupid about me if I didn't get "it". In the end it's still kick-ball without the benefit of bases.
