Apologies. It's just that whenever I hear the word "sturdy" used to describe a female, it reminds me of the good ol' Big Breakfast (TV Show). See MJD's link for more info....

OK, as an erstwhile fan of 'Pee-Wee's Playhouse' (pre-arrest), I can buy that.

OK, but for the record, Big Breakfast was VERY VERY different to Pee-Wee's Playhouse. BB was a morning news show, but a humourous one... PWP was a kid's show, and a weird one at that.

My daughter vaulted with Mary at Dartmouth and she is the same size and has the same build as my kid who is 5'5" and weighs 135. If Mary goes to New York City again in March for the US Scholastic meet, my daughter will get to vault with her again. My kid looks alot like Mary, has the same gymnastics background and signed early for a full track scholarship at a DI school, which is what Mary will have. There the simialarities end. Mary's natural ability is just amazing. She has a very fit build, but her upper body strength is more than you would expect from looking at her. I would put her in the Erin Sullivan and Alan Webb category of high school surprise super stars. It will be interesting to just see what she does between now and June.

Didn:t realize she was also a long jumper:

< Mary Saxer was a double winner at the New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday in the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The Lancaster senior set a meet record in winning the pole vault at 13 feet, 5 inches and broke her Section VI record in winning the long jump in 19-2. >

the take-off is VERY similar, without the 'gathering'. Think how much power she can put into the pole with that much controlled velocity. The ideal pole vaulter: tall, fast, ex-gymnast (uneven parallel bars for girls, rings or high bar or parallel bars for boys) who already excels in the LJ and hurdles.
