Anyone think Tim would be have a better season, which is winning or at least second for all his races, if he had stayed with his old coach? I'm still wondering why the hell he decided to leave his coach, I mean, he must have done something right if he ran the WR for 100 meters. Maybe he didn't have a good personal relationship with his coach (I know how that feels). Anyone know about this?

According to a Los Angeles Times article about a month ago, the dispute was over money. There is pending litigation over the matter, after Graham told Montgomery last fall not to return to camp.

"Montgomery, who filed the suit, contends in court papers that Graham breached their contract & owes him $12,500 — the final chunk of their $50,000-a-year deal. The lawsuit alleges that Montgomery had paid the last quarterly installment 2 days before the phone call.
Graham has counter-sued, saying Montgomery owes him $30,000 — $15,000 unpaid from 2001, $15,000 more as part of a 2002 bonus for breaking the 100-meter mark."

Not having an official coach has certainly hurt him. A couple weeks ago, Tim said that he would announce his new coach (which the media reported was probably Dan Pfaff). However, we haven't heard anything since.

This coach athlete fallout thing is not uncommon. look at how John smith lost touch with Michael Marsh, Danny Everett and Steve Lewis along with Andre Cason afew years back. Money tends to screw thing up between a good coach athlete relationship.

Maybe he felt threatened with the coming of gatlin, and knew he wouldn't get all the attention he needed.

BlackLily`s post is close to the truth..it was over money..involving both Tim and Marion. With out going into details it was a bit of a "greed" thing on the part of the two runners .

The origional law suit stared when Tim mongomery said to many people within track and field that traver had nothing to do with his world record. Not only that but also encouraged marion jones to leave traver. What Tim forgot to say was that he wanted traver to coach him and marion only and not his other team members including new boy Gattlin. Was he afraid? well, look at his recently results from all tim's races this year, not a single fast race. Tim, If you ran 9.78 and was a world record how come you can't do at least 9.97 once this year? People don't believe everything you hear in the news papers or the internet. People who knows tim, know that he is a person who likes to take advantage over others if not take a look at his marriage within 2 or 3 years from now.

How do you know what another man fears? The answer is simple; You don't! There is no proof that Tim is afraid of Gatlin or vice versa so stop assuming for the worst. Who are these people that know Tim, who has he taken advantage of, and who cares? Until you can prove anything stop acting like a bunch of females and put down that haterade.

Aren't we an enlightened member of the 21st century? Since that was supposed to be an insult, I suggest you also put down the haterade. Misogyny is so 50 years ago.

No relationship stays the same over the course of time. The separation probably involved business matters & many relationships breakup over disagreements with money. You have to keep in mind that the sport is their livelihood and most will have to search for new careers by their mid 30's. Since Marion & Tim are both training partners & a couple anything adversely affecting either of them would be cause for concern.
I don't think their athletic performances had anything to do with it. Both Marion & Tim were ranked #1 in the 100 meters last year. You can't argue with that. Keeping the athletes happy, healthy & motivated is what a good coach does at the world class level.

Whether he did or didn't, Charlie had been advising Tim for about 6 months prior to his record.
