  • A friendly reminder...

The guidelines for our message boards apply to this special board as well. Baseless accussations like, "so and so on drugs because it is impossible to run that fast without them," are still against the guidelines. Post them and they will be pulled. Continue to post them and I'll bounce you from the board.

Also note, when we remove messages replies are removed with them. That's how the software works. So if you see an innocent replying message missing that is where it went. Our apologies for the way that works, at this moment we don't have time to fix it.

    The Guidelines:

Ben, there have been a ton of posts over the last few days about how athletes in other sports are all supposedly on drugs (NFL, MLB, NBA, bodybuilding, etc.).

If you are going to enforce this rule for track and field athletes, you should enforce it for athletes in other sports as well.

If not, I would like you to explain why not.

Your expections of perfection are amazing. I hope you subscribe so the TAFN is getting some cash out of you since you expect so much here. As the song laments- is it hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way?

Not sure where you're getting the comment about perfection - I don't expect that.

I simply expect that if T&FN establishes a rule and makes a big show of how strict they are about it, they will enforce it in all cases.

Ben, you're doing a hell of a job. From every chat room I've seen (many of them), being a board monitor is a THANKLESS job. But you're doing as good a job as I've seen. Don't worry about trying to please everybody, because you can't!

I don't remember seeing any specific posts about certain baseball players or others being on drugs, but there's definitely a difference between writing, "Baseball Player X has gotta be on drugs" and writing, "I think that a lot of baseball players on drugs."

Yes, but I have had posts pulled for making generalizations about the use of drugs in track.

Developments in the current sport drugs controversy have during the past week got much media attention including Associated Press, New York Times, USA Today, CNN television, etc.

We could expect some hard facts to emerge from the Federal Grand Jury probe that opens today, 23 Oct 2003, in San Francisco at 1200 PDT. Athletes, and other persons concerned with ths issue, have received subpoenas to appear and testify under oath.

There are many places to get further information. Here are URLS for just a few:

I would guess that what you considered a "generalization" somebody in charge thought was too specific. I'm ballsy enough to try to test that theory. I think:

Nearly everybody at the pro level uses drugs.
Nearly everybody who wins Olympic or worldchamps medals uses drugs.
Nearly all shot putters and distance runners use drugs.

You'll note that I used the speculative "I think" and didn't make a definitive statement. And I qualified it by saying "nearly." And you'll note that my postulations, while getting steadily more specific, don't get TOO specific. At least I hope not. Will this post stand?

                    Re: A friendly reminder...

I understand the basic idea, but at some point we run into the possibility of the Thought Police. It's one thing to say "Johnny Kelley uses drugs!" and quite another to make suggestions about the sport as a whole while making no specific accusations.
