Obviously modafinil is not the petty pseudo-stimulant that it was first characterized as. If so many people are taking it, it's either a masker or works in combination with another (THG?) drug, and the two work together symbiotically?

Always possible of course, but I think you're overlooking the proclivity athletes have for taking anything and everything they think might remotely help them (distance runners and their Japanese hornet venom?). I suspect Modafinil is just the fad du jour. Particularly since so far "so many people" is a handful of people all in the same training group, hardly reflective of the thousands of elite athletes out there.
