  • Mark Block given 10yrs for supplying drugs to Zhanna Block

    http://www.athleticsweekly.com/news/mar ... -year-ban/

No word on whether Zhanna Block (who I presume is retired, not having competing since 2006) will be banned. But if she has her 2001 gold medal taken away, it could in theory be handed to Ekatherini Thanou!

About Damn Time!!! And, to answer your question, Jon, the Ukraine actually offered Zhanna's name up for the IAAF Council at the last Congress?!!

In fairness, being an agent to someone is VERY different from being their coach. Though having looked at that list...

Re: Mark Block given 10yrs for supplying drugs to Zhanna Blo

A question I don't know the answer to: does USADA have any power over Zhanna B? If not, might it be tough to get any suspension in the works for her at this point?

And if USADA's "proof" consists only of Block's "trafficking" in the stuff, would there even be sufficient "non-analyitical" grounds for suspending her?

mump boy's list omits the 2003 World Championships, where Block took the 100m silver medal behind Torri Edwards and ahead of Chandra Sturrup and Ekaterini Thánou.

Not sure what your point is here. The IAAF has a graved-in-stone policy about not commenting on any ongoing investigations (which this obviously was at that point).

Furthermore, the IAAF's not really in the suspension business anymore (which is why the ADAs were created in the first place; to remove any politicking). They can certainly reject the findings of the various ADAs and ask for modifications (or in extreme cases, go to CAS), but you can expect them to have done anything with the Ukrainian information. Assuming that that tale is true (never heard it before).

gh, Jon wondered if she had retired; I was pointing out that she ran for a position at the IAAF congress. The IAAF doesn't determine who runs for which position - something that we both [should] know - the candidate has to be recommended by their country (Ukraine). I never implied that the IAAF was in the commenting business...

Also, since we "don't make accuasations on this board", the "about damn time" was NOT referring to the former athlete...

OK, the problem here is one of English (American?) usage! When you said Ukraine "offered her up" I took that to meant they tried to rat her out. I'm not familiar with the term as related to political candidacy. (Which doesn't mean it isn't common)

If you're suggesting his agency be shut down, I concur wholeheartedly. If you're suggesting that his current clients receive some kind of censure I couldn't disagree more strenuously. On two grounds.

                          1. There's a difference between his roles as coach (to Block) and as agent (to a wide variety of people spread across the country). It was one thing to focus on Trevor Graham and his "training group," but that's not what the bulk of these people are. As the facts, at least as revealed, state, he was supplying his wife, for whom he served as coach. No other names were mentioned.

                          2. All this evidence against Block, as far as I can tell, is fallout from BALCO, which means that none (or virtually so) of his current clients were working with him (or, indeed, even anything but HS/college students at the time), and there is no smoking gun, unless you want to go wild on guilt-by-association. Color me naïve, but I refuse to go down that road, no matter how dirty an operation I think he may have been running almost a decade ago.

Despite my earlier "cheap shot" (a position I maintain for a couple of people on that list), I couldn't agree with you more. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest this involves the people on that list and using someone as your agent, as I said earlier, is massively different to using them as your coach. The whole Trevor Graham thing came about after numerous positives in his group highlighted a group-wide problem. This just shows Mark Block gave drugs to his wife. Lest we forget, this has LONG been rumoured- Zhanna Block's name was mentioned from the start of the BALCO investigation. None of the athletes in that list have anything to answer for with regards to this...
