carl lewis doping?

this is the first article i've seen that mentions carl.. this along with that sf newspaper article have me wondering if there will even BE a USATF after next year

You haven't been paying attention, Lewis was all over the news last year when it came out that USATF and USOC have been covering up positive test results. A quick search on google will find many articles on the subject:

hmm, sorry, i thought i was keeping pretty good track (pun not intended)

are these tests that are often falsely positive (i dont know much about the substances or those tests)? - this is not as bad as growth hormone/steroid cover-up of carl, which is what i thought it might be referring to.

I don't know about false positives but those are all substances commonly available in over the counter medicines and supplements. I know WADA took pseudoephedrine off the banned list last year because it had very little performance enhancement and is so commonly used in Cold Medicines that it was causing many positive tests. Ephedrine is or is about to be banned in the US all together because of many related deaths to its use mostly in diet pills and supplements. I agree it's not like Carl took Testosterone or HGH but the point is it's not up to the USOC or USATF to just wave away whatever positive tests they want too. Surely not all of those 100 or so positives covered up from 1988-2000 were for over the counter stimulants...

Ephedrine in a pill form is not to be banned. What was banned was an "herbal supplement" Ephedra. While ephedrine is an active ingredient in Ephedra, the amounts of it varied from preparation to preparation, as the "herbal supplements" are not under the FDA regulation.

Lewis was a jerk, but he was never found to be a doper. Allow me to quote from the June 2003 edition of TFN, in the "Last Lap" section

.... the IAAF... issued a statement which concluded "the athletes concerned [Lewis et al in 1988] who went on to compete in the Olympic Games were eligible to do so in accordance with IAAF rules."

Goes on to say that IAAF doping zealot Arne Ljungvist did not fault the U.S. for its actions, said IAAF knew all about the Lewis case all along and crictized the USOC for its original statement which "wrongly announced that eight athletes had been positive."
