the evidence against Marion shows that she paid for drugs knowingly for someone else- ie. CJ or TM but did not take drugs herself (or at least there is no evidence of that). Could she be beanned for supporting and aiding other athletes get drugs?

Re: What if...
this was my thought.. back in another thread i mentioned her financially supporting one or the other or both.. she has not denied that, for sure. i have a feeling it may be the case unless there is more evidence pointing to her personally using them...
times like a 9.84 which only TM ran in 2001 being on 'marion's calendar' as a meet result, really points to this..

Re: What if...
For support- No way. It has to be about what she did. She shouldn't have be hanging with the drug crowd, but as long as she didn't partake, she should be on the team.
If they have exceptionally strong circumstantial evidence, rather than a positive test, that could be enough.

Re: What if...
I agree that as things stand now she could be banned but perhaps this would change future rules?
My feeling is that this is the case- she helped TM and CJ get drugs. I NEVER believed her when she said she didn't know CJ took steriods! If true then Marion lacks alot of moral backbone but can't be banned from competing. It would definately lessen my opinion of her as a person but not as an athlete.

I guess you haven't read the rules. It happens that aiding and abetting a doping offense is itself a doping offense. So her defense can't be "I bought this stuff for CJ, or Tim, or whoever."

Re: What if...
i dont think its that weird to not know your spouse/significant other takes steroids. judging by those timetables, its not like not knowing your spouse is a diabetic or something that would be a huge part of their daily routine.. its more like not knowing someone smokes a few cigarettes once in awhile. it wouldn't be hard to hide, and it wouldn't be hard to hide it amidst other legitimate training and supplemental services from the Balco/Team World Record guys. Maybe some sort of fallout from CJ and Balco and steroids is what broke up marion and CJ in the first place.. but TM coming into that picture too makes that scenario a little less likely.
just trying to be open minded about all the possibilities right now

distributing steroids is a federal offense often punishable by 20 or more years in prison. by law it is considered much more serious than using. 20 or more years in prison vs not being able to compete for 2 years.

appreciate the point doug, but i think BALCO are the distributors here.. i don't think in any way Marion would come under that heading..

Re: What if...
I do not believe that the drugs in question fit into the category that you are referring to. Note that THG has now been banned as illegal; before that it had not been through testing that would allow normal use.
I am very cautious about those that want to ban someone because someone in a position of authority THINKS it is likely to be the case. "Likely" does not cut it and, in my book, opens that organization to civil liability for their actions.
Go back several decades and give someone this power and the agenda that "blacks can't be better" and so must be using drugs....

So if someone buys drugs from a dealer, and then gives these drugs (or sells them) to someone else, they're not breaking the law?
I don't think it works that way. Distributing drugs is distributing drugs, regardless of whether you're the "original" source. In fact, by your reasoning, the only truly guilty people in the drug world are the growers in South America...

someone that buys drugs from a dealer and gives them to a friend is not a dealer, and would not be prosecuted as such.
anyway i believe we were just talking about her financially supporting CJ and/or TM's BALCO dealings..
this line of conversation seems to be pretty much done until further evidence comes out

Re: What if...
Sad reality is that every pathetic small-time dealer they find who sells to a couple of friends gets a monster sentence, and every time they catch the higher-up who supplies them they turn state's evidence, plea bargain and get out jail before the guppies do.
