IIRC, Reynolds broke Owens Big 10 200m record after his breakthrough in the 400, so that one stood a long time as well. However, I was a more casual observer at the time and do not remember the details very clearly.

Question: Are the sprint times more greatly affected by the surface (dirt vs. current tracks) than are runway events such as the long jump?

        Bob Beamon 1968 LJ # 2
        Lee Evans 1968 400 # 5
        Tommie Smith 1968 200 # 8

        Joao Oliveira 1975 TJ # 7
        Pietro Mennea 1979 200 # 3

All of these were accomplished in altitude, which kind of screw the stats.

I believe you might have ommited Menea in 79 during the Universades of Mexico. If I remember correctly his time must have been 19.72 then .
