    Martin McGrady - Lee Evans

    Our AD Brooks Johnson used to hire trackmen to teach p.e. courses at St. Albans. Martin McGrady was our sports period "coach" in 1969-70. I don't think I ever saw him train on our track (Esther Stroy, Lacey O'Neal, Robin Campbell, and student Larry Shipp did)

    Not unless the TAC meet and Zurich gala were teleported there!

    How do you account for Billy Olson ranking #1 in the world (outdoors) in 1982?

    Martin McGrady worked for Santa Clara Fire Department from around 1975 until 1980. If anyone knows his present whereabouts that would be great to hear.

    McGrady has to be the best example of not being able to parlay indoor ability to an outdoor event. I think every example you'd come up with is a person running an event which isn't contested outdoors.

    Three more examples:
    John Haines, only person to win four consecutive AAU/TAC/USATF indoor sprint titles (1953-56);
    Jimmy Herbert, won AAU 600m 1938 and 600y 1941;
    John Borican, won AAU 1000m 1939 and 100y 1940-42.

    I was thinking that his World Championship title in the 5000 was pretty good.

    The other candidate for this honor would be Eamonn Coughlin, who was OK outdoors, but (obviously) just fabulous indoors.

    Is McGrady the all-time best example of someone who couldn't trade in his indoor credentials for outdoors? Maybe Herb Washington too.

    I saw them meet at least once ca. 1969-70 at Madison Sq. Garden... McGrady was a force of nature--smooth form and simply unbeatable (indoors). I don't recall that Evans ever did beat him at 600 yards. Didn't McGrady get into stock car racing after his track years?

    ... epic indoor battles. Does anyone know if Lee beat Martin indoors. Seems like he did once(?) - but I'm basing this on my feeble memory. Any rundown on their head to heads?
