    >Actually I read that the sentencing range is 1-20 for each of the three counts,

And apparently it's up to the judge's discretion if the three
    >penalties can be served concurrently.
So it's possible he could get a grand
    >total of one year, serving just a fraction of that if he behaves while in the

    Don't count Mi'ssippi out yet!

Well, this link says he got 60 years period. So why do you say differently? Just curious.

      Re: Smith/Carlos Tribute

At the time I wrote it, sentence had not been handed down. The legal range was 1-20 on each count, and the judge was said to be extremely sympathetic to southern history that embarasses the rest of the nation. He is said to have made some comments that could be taken as pretty racist.
YET...when he DID hand the sentence, he went for the max.
Justice is done. At least in the case of this old hate-filled buzzard.
But there are other survivors still around, including at least one of the alleged triggermen.
I have to hand it to Mississippi, they've taken a step to do the right thing. Let's hope they follow through with more steps.

Thanks for the reply. I was curious why the thread stopped after implying that the judge wouldn't be fair.
Here's a link about the judge (Circuit Court Judge Marcus Gordon). It fails to mention any supposed racist comments. In fact, it seems to imply quite the opposite, according to the attorney's interviewed (at least one of whom is African American):

But I'm not trying to argue, in fact I'd like to return to the original thread intention. In 1968 I was 13 and angry at Carlos and Smith's protest. Now that I'm 50 and more aware of history, I support them and agree that they should be held up for accolades.
