Re: MOST INSANE SPLITS IN RACE
Hard to top that one. In the 1977 Junior Olympic regional or nationals, Tommy Martin (Evansville, IN) went out in 49.something in the 880 on his way to about a 1:51. He still holds the Indiana HS state meet record for 880/800, I believe.

Re: MOST INSANE SPLITS IN RACE
Phillipe(?) Williams, University of South Carolina (1988)...went out in 21.7 on his way to a painful 51 sec. 400m! in the '88 Metro Conference Decathlon.
The guy was a phenomenal talent...26' indoor long jump, 16' vaulter, fast, springy, but not gifted with the greatest sense of pace
My teammate was in the race with Phillipe and was a 49.9 400 guy himself. He ended up going out in 23.5 and wondered why he was getting his butt kicked in the process!Just goes to show you that a man's got to know his limitations

I think that race was shown on wide world of
sports or something like that. I remember watching it on TV.

Re: MOST INSANE SPLITS IN RACE
For a selected 5000m of her 10,000m WR run, Wang Junxia ran some insane time (around 14:26 I think) - faster than Bo Jiang's WR at the time. Scary to think about what time Wang could have ran for the 5000m had she given it a serious go.
The first half of Paula's Marathon WR run was timed in 68:02 - a time that only 3 women bettered in 2003. The craziness didn't end there, however, as the second half of the race was covered in 67:23 - a time that no other women bettered that year! The first half of her London Marathon this year was covered in 68:27 - the unofficial WL time for women this year.
What was Kipketer's 400m split en route to his WR? I seem to remember it was 47 or 48 seconds. Crazy... Just as crazy as Bekele's 5km splits during his 10,000m WR run.

Yeah - that was the last 5000m in which Wang ran 14:26
Also, how bout Fred Newhouse's crazy opening 200m in his 400m races. He normally split the first 200m between 20.2-20.6

Re: MOST INSANE SPLITS IN RACE
I don't have the numbers at hand, but Shaheen ran some pretty crazy up-and-down splits in the 2003 WCh.
Filbert Bayi was known for starting races super fast. In the 1980 Olympics steeplechase, he was timed in 2:38.8 at 1000 and 5:20.3 at 2000 (the WR at the time was 8:08.02). Not surprisingly he ran the last km outside 2:52 and lost to Bronislaw Malinowski who was over 5 seconds down at 2000.
And how about Bekele's last lap in Athens 10000? 53.0 en route to 27:05!
I've also been thinking of some insanely slow splits. One example would be the Athens women's 5000 final, with the first 600 run in 2:04 (roughly 17:13 pace!!!). The most amazing thing is that after such an opening Defar went on to run 14:45.Było smaszno, a jaszmije smukwijne...
