Re: MOST INSANE SPLITS IN RACE

I've also been thinking of some insanely slow splits. One example
    >would be the Athens women's 5000 final, with the first 600 run in 2:04 (roughly
    >17:13 pace!!!). The most amazing thing is that after such an opening Defar went
    >on to run 14:45.

Abbylegesse ran the 3rd k in 2:46.66 - 13:52 pace!! Wit such an up and down pace you can understand how Defar only needed a 68 last lap to win.

Another recent example - Ayhan's 60.5 1st lap in Paris 1500. Surely, with aless erratic pace she would have beaten Tomashova. Mind you, she ran the 1st lap in Munich a year earlier even faster, in 60.14 but got away with it (just - beating Szabo by 2/100ths).

8.6 is what I've always heard

She didn't know any other way to run. On at least a couple of occasions she ran the first lap in under 60! Compared to the average pace for the entire race, that's like El G opening in 52.5.

There are always disputes over what the exact split was. Some say it was 8.5 or 8.6, however the handtimers caught Hayes between 8.6-8.9. I have timed his split many times (from my Video-Tapes) and the most accurate figure I can get is in the 8.7s

Has anyone ever heard that MJ ran a split of 18.9 on a 4X200 relay while at Baylor? It's too bad that it was handtimed!

I have read that MJ ran a 18.5 split (which is what you are talking about) whilst at Baylor in the 4x200 at the Texas Relays in 1990. Many Statisticians quote this split as being unreliable, but the ATFS 2002 Annual lists it in MJ's career section without any doubts.

Does gh or anyone else out there know the exact deal with this infamous sub-19 split?

Re: MOST INSANE SPLITS IN RACE

Fresno Relays announcer April 1989 stated on the end of the men:s 4x100m relay that Quincy Watts ran his anchor leg in 8,6 seconds (in a close runner-up race to the finish with TCU:s Raymond Stewart -- who ran a 9,97 open four weeks later in Waco).

On MJ's 18.5 200m relay split, i guess he got the batton like 10m behind and just smoked the guy and ended up winning the race by a good 3m. the most impressive split of ALL TIME is MJ's 9.2 final 100m of his 19.32 WR. to have run 10.12 on a curve is crazy enough, but to run a 9.2 after having already ran 100m is just disgusting. That guy was just ridiculous and a freak of nature.

Dave Bedford ran a 59.9 first lap of a 10K at the Crystal Palace in 90 degree heat in 1971.
