  • Eamonn Coghlan

Was with some of my old running buddies over the weekend. Coghlans name came up. I recall watching him run a 10,000 on the track at the Penn Relays one year, but my friends couldn't believe it and I don't remember the time, though I think it was in the low 28's. Anyone out there remember the details of this race?

Dave, can Penn ever change the name of the 'Olympic Development' events to something more apropros- like 'Professional' or 'Elite' or 'Open' or something.
        It's so AAU-sounding.

Coghlan and Maree were anything BUT amateurs- they were among the cream of the crop of their era. And in an era where being a pro athlete is a business, developing for the Olympics may not be the main reason they're doing it.

Thanks Dave. I also couldn't remember the guy in second, Reina, although he led the entire way until about 150 to go. I kept thinking Rick Rojas though I knew that wasn't right- but I had the R R in my head.

We could, but I doubt we would after using that moniker for 50 years.

Coghlan's son, John, won the Irish Schools' Intermediate (U-17) 1500m...in a sprint finish earlier this month.

                Martin McGrady???
I seem to remember him with that title back in the days when we had more than the Millrose for Track Meets in MSG,Heck I remember when MSG was MSG and Penn Station was just Penn Station at least I think I can.Nedicks Frank and an Orangade available just about the spot the sprinters stopped after running thru the lobby doors. Now those were boards, you could even hear their sound over the radio exactly at 10:00 when station ?? broadcast the Wanamaker Mile live.

dredging up great memories for me Tom of the "real" MSG up there at 50th and 8th. As a youngster and then a teen it was everything from circus to rodeo to basketball to hockey to.... oh yes, TRACK&FIELD !!!

                    "Chairman of the Boards" title--
in the late 40s or early 50s wasn't there a hot indoor relay team that went by the name Brooklyn Boys Club or something like that- had a mixed combination of Olympic-caliber Jamaican and American sprinters- and one of them I thought was referred to by that 'title'.
They set a world record in the 4x440 or one of those sprint relays, I think I heard.
This was approximately in the Harrison "Bones" Dillard era.

Found a McGrady mention from a good source. The Millrose Program page 55 is where this article came from.
Saw EC at Reebok Icahn and while not running weight he carried the few extra pounds well, looked fit, trim and as always was very cordial to the fans.

Randy this was a thread about 2 years ago . I am quite sure you are thinking of the Grand Street Boys. Guys like McKenley, Rhoden, Dillard.

I hate that term too. Whenever I see results listed for events classed as "Olympic development," I always expect to see results of top 16 / 17-year-old youth athletes who are "developing" talents for the "olympics" as a long-term goal. Putting the term "development" alongside the names of elite athletes just makes our sport sound more amateurish than it already is.
