Who was the first man to vault higher(indoor or out) than Isinbayeva's WR(4.95)? Unhelpful hints: a US collegian, and set an outdoor WR later that year. And already owned an Olympic silver.

im guessing it was done indoors, by whom i dont know. but it pretty much has to be one of these guys doesnt it? Brian Sternberg, John Pennel, Pentti Nikula, David Tork,Robert Gutowski, Ronald Morris, Donald Bragg or John Uelses. Im not sure if Pentti Nikula went to college in the US, so based on the Unhelpful tips ill rule him out. Stenberg, Pennel Tork and Uelses dont have any olympic medals i dont think, so thats them gone, leaving us with Bragg, Morris and Gutowski. the unhelpful hints say a silver medal, and Bragg was the 1960 gold medallist so we are down to two. Morris and Gutowski, both have olympic silvers. But i believe Morris never held an outdoor WR, so im going with the answer being Robert Gutowski, even though i dont think it is actually right
*edit*
id go with Pennel or Nikula as my own guess, but yeah i dont have a clue

Re: PV trivia
Well done, oldvaulter. It probably took a fellow Bruin (if I recall your identity correctly?) to get that one. I was going to add another hint - that the Vault wasn't his 'best event'. Yang did 4.96/16'3 1/4, January '63(LA Times Inv?). Nikula's 5.10(and 5.00,5.05) was a week or two later, but unratified, so C.K. had record until Sternberg's 4.97 on 3/9/63. And of course his outdoor WR and Oly silver were in the Decathlon.

oldvaulter - I was one of those you 'argued' with, but I was fine with it, because you always had very interesting insights. I forget what our last thread was, but you disappeared right after that, so I hope that wasn't a cause. We need your knowledge, experience and perspective around here - so stay! Please.
