  • Remember the Cold War?

From Bert Nelson's "On Your Marks" column in March 1953:

Frank Baker of Mangum, Okla., figures that five million Russians have tied Mel Patton's world record of 9.3 for the 100 yards. Taking official Russian figures of the mourners passing Stalin's bier, Baker calculated that they travelled two abreast at 22 mile per hour, or 9.3 for the 100!

One of the interesting things about that item is that it shows how the publication of T&FN has changed over the years. Stalin died March 5, 1953, yet this item appeared in the March issue, which obviously was not printed until later in March, at the earliest. These days, T&FN is almost always published prior to the month shown as the date of the issue.
