Yes it was. The WC in 1987 were a lot of fun and had some great races, including the women's 800. My favorite in Rome was the men's 400 hurdles. The current WR in the women's high jump was set at this meet. I also liked the stadium in Rome. A lot of good memories from that meet.

Funny, that doesn't look like a WC race.

That's why I said it was at the '76 OG

Actually, before the advent of the World Championships, I think you'll find that the IAAF Rulebook cited the Olympic Games as also being the "world championships"

Great now we get to have WC threads going back 100+ years. Who'd a thunk it! What's that make the 2003 edition in Paris? I think they're calling it the 9th WC. Seems kinda strange to call it the 9th if the OGs were previous world championships?

My point was and remains the OG 800 cited was not an exciting past WC race as the thread intimated.

              How about Edmonton 2001 m200?

              1 4 503 Kedéris Konstadínos GRE 20.04 0.163

              8 8 417 Devonish Marlon GBR 20.38 0.133

It took forever for the photo to be read and everybody just sat there watching the replay over and over. Not sure it was the most exciting race in Edmonton, that'd probably go to the men's 5k, which had 20+ lead changes in 12.5 laps.

The Edmonton race was very close for places 2-7, but there was no doubt about the winner. But take a look at these results:
                Mens - 200m Final
                September 03, 1987
                1. Calvin Smith (USA) 20.16
                2. Gilles Queneherve (FRA) 20.16
                3. John Regis (GBR) 20.18
                4. Robson Da Silva (BRA) 20.22
                5. Vladimir Krylov (URS) 20.23
                6. Floyd Heard (USA) 20.25

It was totally impossible to say who won even from watching the slo-mo - part of the problem being that the top 3 were far apart lane-wise.

Nah, the IAAF is only 91 years old. And I don't think that OG=WC language was in there from day one.

somebody posted Kederis' website on the Current Events side of the board. There's a video of the whole race though it doesn't show the blanket finish as well as some footage does.

I remember that one (m100 1991) well. Also had great rounds leading up too it.

I remember the '87 womens 800 painfully. A young Quirot who should have won the race on merit getting some harsh lessons from the East Germans and being carried wide coming into the final straight. I enjoyed the 1989 World Cup when she finally got her revenge.

Sat at a table next to Quirot's at dinner in Zürich last week, and you'll be glad to know that her (ongoing?) plastic surgery(ies) have been very successful. Major parts of her face are back to normal.

How about the WC'87 mens 400H finish. I saw it live in the stadium and it looked even closer than it was. The crowd went bananas.
