  • US Men's 4x100m relay - 1960 Rome Olympics

Relatively new to this forum so please excuse if this has been raised / discussed previously. My request for information really follows on from the recent debacles with the US men's relay teams over the past few years. Can can anyone enlighten me on the circumstances surrounding the disqualification of the US Men's 4 x 100 relay team in the 1960 Rome Olympics and what was the team (in race sequence) and who was committed the 'offence'? Does anyone have a picture of the relay team ?
I can only assume (from the result / line-up of the Men's 100m individual final) members of the squad were Dave Sime, Frank Budd, Ray Norton plus one other - is this correct ? Thanks.

The Rome Olympics were the first to be televised around the world. I remember watching the men's 4X1 relay. The U.S. team was Frank Budd, Ray Norton, Stone Johnson, and Dave Sime. Budd's pass to Norton was out of the zone. Norton's pass to Johnson was poor, but in the zone. Sime started about six or seven feet behind Martin Lauer on the anchor leg. Sime crossed the finish line first, but of course the U.S. was disqualified. The Germans equalled the world record that they had run in the heats.

Yes, the Lauer thing originated with me (blush), and was subsequently retracted by me last fall

Actually Matt Lauer is a pretty decent anchor.

Didn't Martin Lauer also run the 110 high hurdles?

Except that the thread in question wasn't initiated until 3 months AFTER the Olympics.

Yes it was a joke. See the smiley/winky. He was 4th twice. And was the first man to run 13.2

Incidentally, he was beaten by Lee Calhoun in 56 and 60. Hayes Jones won in 64.
