  • I might have told this story.......

....before. If so, oh well. I like it

There I sat on those hard bleachers at Radcliff Stadium, at another edition of the West Coast Relays. Once upon a time it was a big meet , not the joke we see today, if they even still have it.

    Anyway....

I was checking out the infield with my binoc's when.......huh?....well I'll be damn.....Houston McTear!!!!!!!!!! Yep he was there, getting ready to run in the JC 4X2. I had no idea he was going to be there. I'm thinking he was with Cerritos JC, but not sure. So there I sit, noticing that nobody is paying him any attention. A world class sprinter getting ready to deal with JCers and it was like he was just another 10.50 guy. I was dying to....HEY!!!!!...that's Houston McTear down there........I didn't.

At the gun it was just another JC 4X2. Then it happened. By the time McTear got the baton, he was way back. Need I go on? Yep like a shot out of a cannon, here he came. If you've ever been to a track meet, you're familiar with that.....WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. With about 30 yards to go, he blew by everyone and won going away. The crowd was stunned. The "who was that?" wasn't actually said but you could feel it. It was that strong.

That would be the only time I ever saw him in person. He remains one of speedoms true mysteries. The book on him was that he was lazy and aloof. He didn't like to train. Imagine a high schooler today running a 9.78. Which leads me to my other Houston McTear story.

Let's return to Fresno and the West Coast Relays. There I sat watching the action, when over the PA system...."can I have your attention please? Houston McTear of Baker High School has just ran a 9.2 100 yard dash at the Florida State Track Championships"...remember that....WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....I talked about? Yep! A little while later....."can I have your attention please? Houston McTear of Baker High School has just ran a........if you are standing you might want to sit down for this.....he has just ran a.....9..........FLAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".....t hat brought the house down! A high schooler tying the World Record????????

What a shame he couldn't have attended a USC or UTEP. He simply couldn't make the grades. Not unlike Obea Moore. With proper training,no telling what this amazing athlete might have accomplished.

Ken Thomas the brother of Ram's running back Jewerl Thomas would go out and PR in 9.5, minutes later. To win the high school 100. Now there's another story. Thomas (Hanford) would end up at SJS where he once beat Clancy Edwards in a 10.0 meters. He also played footbal. He was a db. Once in the NFL(Chiefs) a knee injury and...poof!!!!!!!

    uh . . . yeah

"There I sat on those hard Radcliff Stadium(Fresno) benchs scanning the infield with my binoculars when I .......Houston McTear??? Yep there he was getting ready to anchor his JC team in the 4x2 relay.I can't remember if it was when he was at Cerritos or Santa Monica. It really does matter since he was the only "real" sprinter either school had back then.

It was so weird watching this world class athlete getting totally ignored. I wanted to turn and yell......HEY THAT'S HOUSTON MCTEAR DOWN THERE!!!!!".....I didn't.

I think you've already figured out the ending to this little story but let me tell it anyway.........

At the final exchange SMJC (I'll go with that) was way back yes they were out of it.......yeah right!

Ya know how when somebody is really blazin' in a relay the crowd will......Wooooooooooo!!!!!!! "

    etc., etc.

It served what purpose? New posters drop by these boards all the time. I thought it was interesting and would love to hear others tell their little stories?

Why the tuff poster routine anyway?. Why not try being nice for a change? You can do it! That's a challenge by the way.

Instead of doing your ..bah humbug... routine why don't you share a little story of your own?

Well, good then, why don't we all put bring-ups on our calendars reminding ourselves to re-post every interesting posts we've ever made every six months. After all, new posters drop by all the time.

Of course I can. But then I'd ruin my reputation. Hey, being a cynic is a dark and lonely job but, dammit, somebody's got to do it.

I hate to break it to ya like this but I don't have to read things I've already read. I seriously doubt space is a problem. So why not just admit you're a pain in the a.....hold it....you just did didn't ya?

                    Dude it's just a message board.....chill!

No, it's not just a message board. It's the T&FN message board, and it operates on a higher standard--or at least we try--than your run of the mill bathroom wall.

I think its time we had a talk Garry.

I understand human nature and am well aware of how important it is to...."I'll show him he doesn't know everything". I get that everywhere I go. I don't know everything, I just know more than most about track, especially the speed events. One reason being I've simply been into it longer. I I saw my first USSR vs USA in 63. If you watch carefully you'll notice I don't start threads to hassle or cause problems. That only happens after somebody just has to challenge me. Hell spelling?...ha!

What is so damn hard about accepting the fact that yes there are those who have followed the sport for a long time? Ever notice those cool with me never have any problems with me?

Sure I might have read something wrong. It does happen. Now compare that to the amount of information and knowledge I share here. Why zero in on the negative? I don't appreciate having to prove everything to you or anyone else. If I say Cliff Branch ran on a 4x4 team, he did just that, or T&FN is wrong. Do you think I'm not aware of the knowledgeable posters here? No way I try to pass off crap as being fact. Come on man!

I read my first Track&Field News mag in 1966. Haven't missed one since. That's a world of information Garry. Now add the internet and my interest and it would work better if you simply accepted the fact I know what I'm talking about.

Not here to hassle or be hassled...ok?

No one is disputing that (well, not on this thread at least). They were just picking up on the fact that this story has been posted a couple times before. If you feel you may have mentioned it before and want to bring it up again for whatever reason for the newbies, then just do a simple search for the old thread and bump it up by adding a new post to it - it saves you all that time typing it all out again.

How come whenever anyone posts the slightest negative comment towards you, you always twist it into being some sort of attack on your knowledge? It smacks of an inferiority complex.

Brutal, have you considered trying some of that yourself?
