  • Ken Thomas

Brutal's post relating to Houston McTear, and then Ken Thomas was of interest. I tend not to stray onto the message board that often, and was dismayed to see how quickly it degenerated into name calling.
Incidentally Ken Thomas (5'9/211), who was remarkably disimilar physically to younger brother Henry (6'2/170), may have beena db at SJS, but at KC he was a receiver in the 1 year he played.
Must be a typo. Unless Brutal had defected, I doubt he was present to see Bob Hayes win the USA-USSR 100 in 1963 - it was in Moskva. The previous year 9at Stanford) is more likely - when Hayes beat Roger Sayers by 2 foot as both ran 10.2

Not real sure where you're going with this.

Ken Thomas had two brothers that I know of. There was Jewerl who played for the Rams, who was his older brother and Ike (who I knew personally) his younger brother. Didn't know of a Henry.

While at SJS Ken was a defensive back. The Chiefs drafted him (as you can see below) as a running back. Ken's big track accomplishment was beating world class speedster Clancy Edwards in a 10.0.

    paste job

History of those SJS players drafted by the Chiefs.

    San Jose State

    1990 12 14 318 Tony Jeffery WR
    1988 6 2 139 James Saxon RB
    1984 11 5 285 Bobby Johnson RB
    1983 7 5 173 Ken Thomas RB
    1979 4 3 85 Frank Manumaleuga LB
    1975 6 9 139 Dave Wasick LB
    1972 14 22 360 David Chaney LB

Not sure where you are going with the Hayes bit. I first saw him on TV in the early 60's (not sure what year) vs the USSR.I would see him about a half dozen times on TV as a trackster. Yes I saw the 64 Olympics.

Sayers was one of the few sprinters to beat Hayes in a 100. He only did it once however.

I've sat right next to Ken Thomas at a meet in Lemoore. Built like an anvil. He was out of Hanford High School.

Another paste job where they are talking about Thomas...

The Lowery family has been in Santa Cruz County since the 1960s at least --- this young man reminds me of Ken Thomas, the defensive back who set interception records at San Jose State (most Touchdowns Scored, Interception Returns:
5, Ken Thomas, San Jose State, 1979-82 (tied w/ 2 others)
    Mark Conley
    Santa Cruz Sentinel
    December 17, 2005

I saw him return one of those. Dude I don't make stuff up...ok?

Oops, misled you on the Ken Thomas thing. My apology. As far as Hayes is concerned, the old football series "Greatest sports legens" has a DVD called speed burners - covering Hayes (+ Sayers, Simpson, and Elroy Hirsch). The Hayes section has video of his 9.1/9.1w in St Louis 1963, plus 10.2 in the USA-USSR dual in '62, AAU 1964 + OT '64 and TV coverage of the OG 100/400 relay in '64

I must confess I have no idea what any of this is about. The Thomas brothers were from a local high school. What track fan who was around in the 60's doesn't know the Bob Hayes story?

All I can figure is that you don't know me. Big track fan going back to about 62. Sort of an historian to be honest.

Sounds like he's just informing you of a DVD you might be interested in, even if you already know a lot about the subject.
