I have just received the sad news of the passing of Dick Buerkle this morning. A great story of a a runner who entered Villanova on his own without a scholarship. He earned one quickly and became a legend at Nova thereafter.
major disappointment of not allowed to run in 1980 OG due to political decision.

          Only 72!

From the 1972 and 1976 5000 men Olympic teams only George Young and Duncan Macdonald are left.

In the early 1980s I attended a talk by Arthur Lydiard at Jeff Galloway's Phidippides running store in Atlanta. I spotted Dick at the gathering and what I found most interesting was that he seemed to be unnoticed or unrecognized by the other attendees.

Dick was a great competitor. I especially remember seeing him run the 5,000 in Montreal (1976). There were three heats of the 5,000. The first heat was won in 13:30 and the second heat was won in 13:45. Dick ran 13:29 in the third heat, but unfortunately he finished in ninth place and did not make the final. You knew when he was in the race, it was going to be fast and competitive. He won our 1976 Olympic Trials 5,000 in 13:26.

More shocking news! I realize that my running heroes are aging, but it's still been shocking to read of so many of their deaths recently

Is that Barry Brown trailing in the photo? If so, at least three persons from that race gone too soon.

looks very much like Barry Brown, and the finish order would seem to back that up: 1. Buerkle; 2. Pre; 3. Howell Michael; 4. Barry Brown; 5. Chris Stewart; 6. Eamonn Coghlan; 7. Doug Brown.

I still think it looks like Shorter....but since he wasn't in the race that settles that.
