  • Help With Info from 1969 or 1970 T&FN High School Annual

The I June 1969 issue of T&FN has a time of 4:08.6 for Chuck Baker of Elkhart, Indiana in the High School Marks (p. 12). That time would make lists I maintain for Indiana HS T&F, but I need to know the name of the meet (which isn't reported in that issue of T&FN). I know his mark wasn't at the Indiana state meet that year which he won in 4:15.9.

I don't have a copy, but I'm wondering if the name of the meet Baker ran his 4:08.6 at is identified in the 1969 T&FN HS Annual for that year (or maybe the 1969 marks were listed in the 1970 T&F HS annual as I think back then annuals reported results from the previous year)?

Any help in identifying the meet for Baker's 4:08.6 performance from 1969 is appreciated!

The 1969 marks are in the 1970 High School Annual. The Annual does not list meets, locations, or dates for any of the marks. And Baker's 4:08.6 is NOT listed in the Annual at all. It was indeed on the HS List in I June 1969 T&FN. It's the only mile mark on that list to not be on the list in the 1970 Annual. Nor is it on the Annual's All-time List (30 deep thru 1969), which cuts off at 4:09.2. My best guess is that the mark was determined to be bogus in the interim.
Note that Baker is on the Annual's 1969 880y list at 1:53.6.

Great info, thanks! Baker did run a 4:08.9 as a junior in 1968 at the Indiana State Meet behind Scott Hiles (Anderson Madison Heights) 4:08.0, a state record at the time. Apparently he didn't improve on that time his senior year (although he was the state champion in 4:15.9 as noted above).

        Yes, the All-Time List thru 1969 that I referred to contains both Hiles' 4:08.0 & Baker's 4:08.9 from 1968.
