    4-time Olympian, 3 time medalist in the javelin throw - silver in 1964, bronzes in 1960 and 1968. Bronzes at 1958 and 1966 European Championships. Carried Hungarian flag at Olympic Opening Ceremony in 1964, 1968, and 1972

        When Steve Backley retired after the 2004 Olympics, I ended up searching through my Wallechinsky Olympic book for an example of another T&F athlete who'd won 3 Olympic medals in the same individual event without winning a gold. The first example I found was fellow javelin thrower, Gergely Kulcsár.

          Great question for a trivia list - here is such a list - 7 athletes who did 8 times, led by Merlene Ottey who did it in 2 events, and one time won 4 individual medals in the same event without winning gold:
