  • "Babe" TV movie biography tonight, Feb. 1

"Babe," the 1975 film biography of 1932 Olympic champion Mildred Didrikson, is scheduled tonight (1 Feb 2006) on the Golf channel.

Winner of the Olympic javelin and 100m hurdles, she is the first athlete described in the book "Track's Greatest Women" by Jon Hendershott.

The three-hour film airs at 1930 EST and repeats at midnight EST. As usual, you should check your local listings.

Why the Golf channel? Because "Babe" became a very successful golf pro after winning her Olympic medals.

Oh, that Babe. I'm glad. When I saw the subject, I thought you were referring to the pig.

Fair 'nuff. Surely worthy of such coverage and one of the greats of our sport. But as far as I'm concerned, there's only one Babe. They retire uniform numbers. Howsabout retirin' that name out of respect to the one-and-only.

You would prefer we call her Mildred?

Well, we should reserve the "title" for the greate athlete; while I am convinced of Ruth's greatness, I am not sure his star is brighter than Mildred's. Ruth only made it in one single sport, after all, not three.

You don't have to call him a pig. Yeah, he was fat but he did hit a lot of home runs.

                            Babe

Babe Didrikson was born Mildred Ella Didriksen in 1911. She changed the spelling of her last name and changed her birth year to 1914.
