      He was only 64 years old. Willie Smith got his Olympic gold medal running 44.81 (third leg) on the U.S. four by 400 relay team in the 1984 Olympic semi-finals. Very sorry to hear about his death.

        I remember seeing him in HS. Always thought he was one of the smoothest runners I ever saw.

          I remember he had a reasonably long career that was not without some bad luck. He was on the 1980 US Olympic Team and fell in the 4x400 at the first World Champs.

            Deeply saddened to hear this news. I had the opportunity to speak with one of the student athletic trainers at Auburn when he competed there, and he had only good things to say about Willie. Rest in peace.
