Happy birthday today (Saturday) to an Olympic champion who competed in two events at only one Olympic Games and was born on a Monday 88 years ago today, but died on a Monday at the age of 61.

This athlete did not compete in the Olympic hurdles, but did win that Olympic gold medal on a Saturday.

No world records were involved with our birthday individual's Olympic gold medal.

Nobody said this would be easy, but can you please try and name our birthday athlete for this first Saturday of February?

I will tell you that this champion did not win Olympic gold in Europe or North America.

I haven't got many of these right, but I'll guess one of my favourite athletes of the 50's, the WMU Bronco, Ira Murchison.

Ira Murchison it is. Well done, noone. Ira Murchison was born on Ronald W. Reagan's 22nd birthday. He (Ira Murchison, not Ronald Reagan) was fourth place in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic men's 100 and one week later he won an Olympic gold medal when he ran the first leg on the United States' four by 100 relay (39.5). Of course, noone is correct in saying that Murchison went to Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This coming March will mark 27 years since Murchison died at the age of 61.
