  • Edwin Moses Turns 22

Happy birthday today (Sunday) to an Olympic champion who won gold and silver medals at two Olympic Games in Europe.

Our birthday champion shares the same initials as this athlete's home country.

Born 120 years ago today, this individual won the Olympic gold medal approximately 5,108 miles (9,461 kms) from the place where this athlete was born.

You might have figured out that our birthday person died at the age of 76.

This champion was not born in South America, Australia, Antarctica, or Europe.

Another Olympic champion, in a similar event, had a birthday on the same day our birthday athlete died.

Some of you might already know the name of our birthday athlete.

    Who is this Olympic champion?

This is the South African hurdler. His name was Sidney Atkins or something like that.

Olli, you were definitely "on" the right track. It is Sydney Atkinson. You are not being penalized for leaving off the "on". Good job.

Sydney Atkinson took the silver medal in the 110 hurdles at the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. Four years later in Amsterdam, he won the Olympic gold medal in the same event.

Atkinson was born in Durban, South Africa and died on August 31, 1977.

      Thank you, Olli.

Thanks for approving it without "on". I wavered between Atkins and Atkinson and turned out to be wrong. I checked it immidiately aftewards but thought it would be against the rules to correct it. I have a vague memory
I might have made the same mistake before (year ago? two years ago?).

But did you also make a slight mistake with y in Sydney? In wiki, at least, it is Sidney.

Haha, I did make the same mistake quite recently, and didn't learn anything. Perhaps next time I'll remember it's no Atkins diet.

I have never seen his name as "Sidney".

In wikipedia's result page it's Sydney.

But the page on him has Sidney.

              Who knows...
