  • Big Event

This month's (March) "Big Event" happened 59 years ago today. You might remember this world record was not in the hurdles. This world mark broke an old world record which had been set just about one year before this one.

About one month after our "Big Event", this world record was broken again. All three athletes (old record, "Big Event", & new record) in these three records were different people.

None of the three athletes mentioned above ever won an Olympic medal. All three athletes were from the same country.

Now, please name our "Big Event" for this final day of March. Who was the athlete that set this world record and in which event was the record set? Can you tell where this "Big Event" happened (name of city)? Extra credit if you can tell the actual mark. Good luck.

Perhaps this has something to do with glass fibre poles?

Very good, noone. John Uelses cleared 4.89 (16' 1/2") on this day in 1962 at a meet in Santa Barbara, California. That broke the world record set in May of 1961 by George Davies at 4.83 (15' 10 1/4"). Dave Tork broke Uelses' mark at the Mt. SAC Relays in April of 1962 when he cleared 4.93 (16' 2"). Remember those days? You didn't have to wait very long for a new pole vault world record.

          Thank you, noone.
