Happy birthday today (Sunday) to two Olympic champions with a total age today of 100 years.

Our birthday athletes were born approximately 3,171 miles (5,104 kms) from each other.

These two champions competed in a total of six Olympic Games and won a total of three Olympic gold medals.

You may know that our birthday individuals competed at the same Olympic Games.

One of our birthday champions won a World Indoor gold medal, while the other athlete won four World Indoor gold medals.

The older athlete was four years old when the younger person was born.

Neither athlete was born in North America, Australia, Antarctica, South America, or Asia.

Interesting to note that one of these two champions competed in the same event at four Olympic Games.

Can you name our birthday athletes for this sixteenth Sunday of 2021?

    Please try.

The Z makes it pretty easy. The only Z I can think off hand is Robert Zmelik, who was a decathlete, which takes care of the hurdles.

Given the distance in their birth places, I assume HG was an African. Haile Gebrselassie would work, eh?

Happy 52nd birthday today to Robert Zmelik and happy 48th birthday today to Haile Gebrselassie. Good work, tandfman.

Zmelik (born in the Czech Republic) won the Olympic decathlon at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. He was seventh place in the decathlon four years later in Atlanta.

Gebrselassie (born in Ethiopia) won Olympic gold in the 10,000 at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He was fifth place in the 10,000 at the 2004 Athens Games and sixth place in the same event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics (his last Olympics).

Haile Gebrselassie won the Berlin Marathon four times and the Dubai Marathon three times. He also won the Amsterdam Marathon and the Fukuoka Marathon.

Happy birthday to both athletes and thank you, tandfman.

When he was born, it was still Czechoslovakia. The Czech Republic wasn't created as such until just after he won his gold medal.

I certainly should have thought about Zvotzkiy (whom I've actually met) and Zatopek. I guess I was fixated on the hurdles issue. ☹

Sorry, she's listed in our database as Dana Ingrova-Zatopkova, because she competed in 1948 as Dana Ingrova
