Wilt's long shooting gets a bad rap because of his rather poor free-throw shooting. He was more of a Sundance Kid at longer range . . .

As bad as his reputation was for making free throws, he made 28 of 32 when he scored the 100 points

but I've heard the naysayers claim that it was a HS gym, and the rims were loose by NBA standards and all kinds of shots rattled in

It was more than a reputation. His career FT% was 51%. That said, '62 was his best year and the only year he was over 60%.

To gh's point about the circumstances for the 100 point game was that the couple of surrounding games he also shot better at the FT line than he did at nearly any point during his career.

I remember he had a great line on Johnny Carson about it. Johnny asked him about free throw shooting, and he said he had even gone to a psychiatrist about it. Then Johnny, "How did that work out?" Wilt - "Now the psychiatrist can't shoot free throws either!"
