  • Big Event

This month's (June) "Big Event" was a world record which happened 30 years ago today.

Our "Big Event" occurred in the same country which hosted the Olympic Games some seven years before this world record was set.

No hurdles were involved in our "Big Event".

The athlete that set this world mark won an Olympic gold medal about fourteen months after setting this record.

You might know that this "Big Event" record broke a world record which was set at the Olympic Games.

Can you name the event and the athlete that established our "Big Event" for today?

Extra credit if you can give the actual mark and the place where this record was set.

100 m, Leroy Burrell, 9.90, Randall's Island? If so, then the Olympic Games gold medal was in the 4×100.

On this date (June 14) in 1991 at Randall's Island, New York, Leroy Burrell broke Carl Lewis's world 100 record of 9.92 from the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Burrell ran 9.90 which would stand as the world record until Carl Lewis ran 9.86 at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan in late August of 1991. Yes, Leroy ran the second leg on the winning four by 100 relay in Barcelona at the 1992 Olympic Games.

      Very well done, Davidokun.

Starting tomorrow, there will be a slight two-week break on the Olympic champion birthday quizzes as we prepare for another wonderful U.S. Olympic Trials.
