My vote goes for Beamon, as his name has entered common vernacular.

I would put Fosbury first now, because of the Flop being the way we know people HJ.
I wouldn't include Fosbury because hardly anyone outside of track and field tell you who Dick Fosbury is. I would say Owens, Lewis and Jenner if we're talking about people whose popularity is based on being a track and field athlete, and I would go with Brooks, Cosby and Jenner on overall popularity.

I'm totally biased, but for me it's only my all-time Track & Field idol,

That's awesome! Until my "grandpa" eyes focused I thought that was Roger Maris for two seconds.
You there, on the motorbike! Sell me one of your melons!

Saw Cosby high jump something like 5'10" or 6'0 on the Johnny Carson Show. Fosbury slipped on the surface.

While we're nominating celebrities who also were athletes, Johnny Mathis (HJ) comes to mind

Mathis is more in the "athlete" quality if you're talking national-class (let alone world)

oh, now that reminds me that Stacy Dragila, possibly the most famous field eventer back in 2000 jumped over a “double Shaq” on Leno.
what could Ryan Crouser do on TV? Put a bowling ball into the pins without it touching the lane?
