    Ukrainian Valery Podluzhny was the top Soviet long jumper in the 1970s. He won Olympic bronze in 1980, with a personal best of 8.18, was the European Champion in 1974, won the 1974 and 1979 Universiade, and added silvers at the 1976 and 1979 European Indoors. He also competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics, placing ninth and seventh, respectively. Podluzhny won gold at the 1973 European Cup, silvers at the 1975 and 1977 European Cups, and bronze at the 1979 European Cup. He was the Soviet long jump champion in 1973-77 and 1979 and won silver in 1972 and bronze in 1978. Podluzhny finished his sports career after the 1980 Olympics and later worked as a children’s coach in his hometown of Donetsk, Ukraine. He was also director of a sports school in Donetsk.
