  • Big Event

This month's (October) "Big Event" was a world record which was set in Asia on this day 57 years ago. The athlete that set this mark would go on to win an Olympic bronze medal, but not in the hurdles. It would be the second Olympic bronze medal this person would win in a certain event. Another athlete beat this world record some eight years later in Romania. You may already know that the individual who set our "Big Event" record represented a nation which is no longer a nation.

Can you name the athlete that set this record and the venue where this mark took place? Please think about it and who knows (?) maybe you'll come up with the right answer.

Very well done, LopenUupunut. It is Yelena Gorchakova (USSR). She threw the javelin 62.40 (204' 9") in the qualifying rounds at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. She went on to take the bronze medal in the women's javelin in 1964.

          Thank you, LopenUupunut and bambam1729.
