The Frank Murphy book "The Silence of Great Distance" (published 2000) is all about the sagas of both Ormsby and Herbst!
It covers the entire year of Ormsby & Herbst, from XC to the NCAA race where Ormsby left from!
It's also a great compact history of post-Title IX women's running, from Doris Heritage and Mary Slaney to 1986 and beyond, including Suzy Favor, who was a frosh when Herbst was a senior!
But the book is mostly about the psychology and emotions of running, and how Ormsby came to attempt suicide, and how it greatly affected Herbst!
It's much respected and praised!

Ormsby was treated at Duke Hospital while I was a first-year resident in orthopaedics and was on the spine service. Rounded on her daily for about 10 days. Was tough to see that.
