            Second attempt:

At the 1972 Games in Munich, Palestinian gunmen attacked Israel's Olympic team steps away from the U.S. marathoners in the Athlete's Village. Five days later, as the Americans toed the starting line, fear was in the air— but so was determination.

Not surprising that you two would gravitate to one another. I believe he was one of the writers for the miniseries 'The First Olympics'.

But back to the esteemed Mr. Moore.

For several years I brought "Best Efforts" with me to track meets at HF seeking his autograph. I was finally successful at one of the Prefontaine Classics. He actually apologize that it took me so long to find him! So down to earth and humble. I said one of my favorite lines he had ever written was how he described Prefontaine competing in the AAU 3 mile his senior year in HS-- the first three finishers had crossed the line and turned and looked behind them and "saw the future running up at them." He said Prefontaine had cut that article out and carried it in his wallet. R.I.P. Kenny Moore.

There was also a passage where an amateur photographer met with them and had been taking photos of the siege as it happened and some of the photos had been picked up by UPI and he was to be paid, but he instead donated the money to the victims' families mentioning he felt guilty about making money off the deaths of people.

Thank you for your research. Fascinating story and writing from 50 years ago.

My favorite Kenny Moore article was the SI piece theorizing the success of African distance runners was because they are the descendants of 100 generations of high altitude cattle rustlers who outran their pursuers as they drove their purloined herds back up the mountain.

I, particularly, recall the two early 80s SI articles on Lewis and Coe-very good.

Interesting. I thought I'd seen every video on the marathon in 1972 but not this one! Seems to be a lot of Ron Hill in it, and various runners collapsing.

Kenny Moore had such an interesting and accomplished life. He even received praise for his acting in Personal Best. Vincent Canby of the New York Times, who was not a huge fan of the movie, wrote: "The film's biggest surprise is Kenny Moore, who plays the former athlete who falls in love with Chris Cahill and who saves her from a well of loneliness. Mr. Moore, a former Olympic marathoner (Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972) and now a senior writer on Sports Illustrated, appears to be a natural film personality-relaxed, charming, low-keyed and self-assured."
