I think 7 footers have a tendency to lack the flexibility to wrap themselves around a bar higher than their own head. Also perhaps lacking a little in co-ordination. For example, very tall soccer players tend to be lacking in ball skills.

I agree. The tallest WR holder is still Walt Buddy Davis. He was 6-8 and jumped 6-11 1/2 back in 1953. He did not even use the straddle. Soto was 6-4 and Patrik Sjoberg was almost 6-7. Nobody had a better bar clearance than him.Shortest 2.40 jumper is Stefan Holm at about 5-11. His 2.40 jump was indoors in Madrid. Charles Austin, another 2.40 jumper was 6ft.
Ideal height for a HJer? Who knows, but I would guess between 6-4 and 6-7.

Not a 2.40 jumper (he set an indoor WR 2.39i), but Dietmar Moegenburg was 2.01/6-7.

In my time watching the sport, the tallest jumper I am aware of is the former UK record holder Geoff Parsons at 6'8" (2.03) whose best jump was 2.31.

He was a member of quite a small club and often competed in several events for them in relatively low-level league matches. I remember seeing him run a 200 where he was clearly last of 5 runners for about 150m and then made it look like he was still accelerating in the last 40m while the others decelerated.

On the men's side, there's Geb & Bekele clocking in at 1.64/5'5".

Although he cannot match their achievement, Tsegaye Kebede is shorter than both (5'2" / 157cm).

Has there ever been a better men's sprinter shorter than Ira Murchison's 5'5"?

There was a sprinter from Thailand named something like Ratanapol who stood 5'1" (I think)
