Happy 78th birthday today to Edith McGuire (Duvall). Very good, bambam1729.
Edith McGuire was born in Atlanta, made the U.S. Olympic team to Tokyo in 1964, and won two Olympic silver medals and one Olympic gold medal in Japan.
She was second place in the women's 100 and won the gold medal in the 200. She also anchored the U.S. four by 100 relay to a silver medal finish and a world record. Most of you probably know the story about this women's relay in Tokyo. Poland won the race in 43.6 (world record) and the U.S. ran second in 43.9, however about two years after this Olympic race, one of the Polish runners from the winning team failed a chromosome test. Poland was allowed to keep their Olympic gold medal, however they lost the world record (43.6) to the U.S. (43.9).
As far as I know, Edith McGuire Duvall still lives in Oakland, California and still follows the sport.
This particular birthday quiz took a few unexpected twists and turns, however we did make it to the finish line.
Thank you very much bambam1729, Olli, cigar95, and mcgato!
