  • smith vs michael johnson 200m the last 100m

as you know johnson 19.32 at 200m in atlanta is the current world record and will be for many years, his split at 100m was 10.12 and last 100m was 9.20. smith i estimate was probably in the 10.5s,lets say 10.55 so that would give him about 9.28 even throwing his arms up with 15 yards to go. if smith would have ran all out all the way perhaps 9.15 or low 9.1s. that 10.12 curve for michael is really mind boggling, no doubt what so ever is the fastest on the curve, even faster than carl lewis and john carlos.

I think we will have to start to dig in to some old archives to see what we can find about 100m splits during 200m races.
Who's the fastest on the turn and who the fastest on the straight ... EVER !!!

It will take some time but might be fun.

Smith and Lewis weren't really grat curve runners, but Carlos could tear it up. I truly believe overall, SMith and Carlos had better top-end speed than Michael Johnson, but what seperated Johnson from everyone is that he maintained his top end speed much longer. Does anyone have any information on the average length of time it takes an runner to reach full speed and the average length of time an average runner maintains that speed?

I have studied and analysed many Track races from Video footage.
Regarding MJ's 19.32s WR, I have analsyed the Video of the race 3 times, and the most accurate 1st 100m Split that I have found is 10.14s.
Which means that his last 100m/2nd 100m was run in 9.18s!!! Which is totally blazing.

I have also studied TJ's ex-WR 19.83s in the Mexico City OG in'68.
He had a hamstirng injury, which prevented him from running the turn at his normal speed(10.2-10.4s for the 1st 100m), and he ended up running the curve in 10.52s. Which even then, back in '68, was pretty slow.
He then flew off of the turn to run a then WR of 19.83s. Giving him a 2nd 100m of 9.31s.
These Splits come from a 50Hz Video(required for clear footage of 200m races) so the footage is very good(also in technicolour)

In the last 10-15m ,Tommie ran with his hands raised(both hands and arms in the air!) I estimate that this cost him around 0.13s.
        9.31s-0.13s = 9.18s(same as MJ in Atlanta)

When talking advantages, take into consideration that TJ had the help from the Mexico City altitude. And MJ(of course) had the help of the Atlanta track.

MJ,however, although being hotly pursued on the turn by Ato Boldon and Frankie Fredericks, wasn't pushed in the home staright, and therefore he had to run his own, lownly, race.

TJ, had to come back from a 1-2m defecit on John Carlos(who had run the turn,in Mexico City,in around 10.2-10.4s) and therefore had to concentrate on running down John, and then concentrating on holding and extending that lead.

If there was a mythical Atlanta track, in Mexico City.TJ has been brought to the 1990's by a tim-machine and is being coached by MJ's coach, and has got used to today's tracks, today's spikes and technology, and MJ and TJ are both 100% fit...

I say that MJ leads off the turn by a 1m.(times are; 10.10s for MJ and 10.20s for TJ)
And then TJ runs a great 2nd 100m(in 9.05s), and MJ gets chewed up and runs a tight 2nd 100m(under pressure) of 9.15s.

MJ knows that TJ is coming after him, and he can feel him breathing down his neck, and he tightens up greatly...

This leads the race down a photo-finish decision, by(oh no!!!)the IAAF!!!
