Happy 84th birthday today (Thursday) to an Olympic champion who competed in two Olympic Games and won medals at both those Games.

This athlete did not compete in the Olympics in North America, South America, Africa, Australia, or Antarctica.

Can you name our birthday champion on this first Thursday of August?

Give it a go and good luck.

Happy 84th birthday today to Hayes Jones. Nice going, bambam1729.

Hayes Jones was born in Mississippi on the first Thursday of August in 1938.

Jones made two U.S. Olympic teams. He won the bronze medal in the 110 hurdles at the 1960 Rome Olympics and four years later, at the age of 26, Hayes Jones won the gold medal in the 110 hurdles at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.

      Thank you, bambam1729.

Have always been interested in Lee Calhoun, twice winner by inches - compare Jack Davis twice silver medallist by very narrow margins. Why were the times in Rome so slow? - in Melbourne I believe they ran into a fairly strong headwind.

Some say there was a very strong crosswind during the 110 hurdles in Rome (1960). The official wind reading was 0.0 (-1.9 in Melbourne). Willie May and Martin Lauer both said the crosswind in Rome effected their balance during the race.
