  • R.I.P. Frank Tomeo

I just heard that Frank Tomeo passed away this Sunday in Kentucky. Frank was a powerhouse middle distance runner from Fordham that I remember quite well on 2-mile relay legs in the Garden.
He ran for Quantico and again I didn't want to run the same leg as Frank as he was always an "all out" sprinter from hand off to hand off. I believe he may still hold some top 5 times for Fordham in 880/1000 times and in Fordham's MR and 2MR teams.
    Sincere condolences to his family.

a nice obit (which wrongly credits him with being a national champion)

There may have been naive mistake with the writer's notes in the Obituary as Tomeo did earn National AAU certificate for Fordham's win in 2-mile relay at the 1962 National AAU Indoor Championships in MSG (Tomeo anchored). Two weeks later he won the 1000 yd title in 2:11.5 at the IC4A Indoor Championships in MSG. Ther were no NCAA Indoor Championships in 1962.
There is a very good article about Tomeo commenting on him being Fordham's Courtney No 2 when he was a junior with comments by Courtney that his 1:51.5 half mile time was better than he ran at Fordham when he was a junior at Fordham. In the Obituary there were responses by Tom Bache on his time with Tomeo in Viet Nam and their service in the war which would put him into an automatic "National Champion" category. You are right; however, the Obituary puts national champion in same sentence as his 1962 IC4A 1000yd victory.
