  • RIP Bob Hersh

Per Walt Murphy via a message or email shared by Tom Cuffe with our group. I imagine more details forthcoming soon, but most know he'd been dealing with cancer for years, I believe. I don't have to tell anyone on here what a legend he is in our sport. I look forward to seeing tributes from this board and learning things about him and his contributions to the sport I don't yet know.

I was very sad to get this news early this morning. Our sport has lost some great people over the past twenty years (and more) and Bob was one of those people.

I will have more to say later but just want to mention now that this is a huge loss to USATF as well as the sport. Bob was one of the few of us around at the beginnings of USATF (then TAC/USA) and had a great knowledge of the history of the organization. Now there is maybe just David Greifinger, John Chaplin and me left.

Bob’s nickname was “Commissioner” because even though he is known for his involvement on the elite side, he knew and cared about the sport from top to bottom and was involved in everything.

He was a true friend and mentor. We will all miss him greatly. Our sympathy and prayers to Louise and family. May he rest in peace.

keeping it simple for now, I'll just say that Bob was the most brilliant mind ever to grace our sport

Even though I knew him only on this message board and never met him, I considered him a personal friend. Sad.

Nothing but love & respect for Bob, an unsung, brilliant stalwart in our sport. Deepest condolences to his family.

I was really lucky to get to know Bob first through the old Darkwing t-and-f list and then in person through GH. I'll remember the pre/post meet meals and chatter with great fondness. Bob loved the sport immensely and was an excellent servant to it. Thank you and rest well Comish.

I love this thread from Liam Boylan-Pett on Bob's Penn Relays call of Columbia winning the 2007 Penn Relays 4x800 - https://twitter.com/liam_bp/status/1...6bjLGOiEQ&s=19

The thing about the Columbia team winning the COA 4x800 at the 2007 Penn Relays is that I bet he never in his wildest dreams expected to Columbia win a COA relay in his lifetime.

Columbia’s athletic achievement were fairly modest for decades. I think they had a good men’s fencing team and a couple women’s teams have been good in recent years but that was about it. We were usually at USATF meetings on October weekends when Penn played Columbia in football and he almost never got bragging rights. In my day, Penn, Princeton, and Columbia would have an indoor tri-meet and we’d score 80+, Princeton would score 60+, and the question was usually whether Columbia would reach double digits.

In 2007, we knew Columbia had a seeded 4x800 team but no one picked them to win. I was surprised that Bob wasn’t speechless he was so overjoyed. It was a great day.

What was the name he was posting under on here? I have not been on here much the last few years. Always sorry to see those that have done much for this sport go.

He was very active under another name (gh can out him if he wishes) and he was also a 'professional' name.
