  • Longest subscribers - where do I rank?

I'm into my 43rd year. My first issue was April 1964. I still have almost all of them stacked in the closet. I'm sure some/several (many?) of you go even further back. Quien? (As a Spanish owl says.)

I'll jump into first place, as I started in September 1958. And I still have all of them ! Plus I have also amassed ALL issues back to 1948's inception, although a lot of the 1948-1951's are photocopies.

I'm a slacker-loser. I have them all back to 1961 (and the rest on microfilm), but my first subscribed issue was Mar II (remember the semi-monthlies?) 1970, my freshman year at the Farm School.

I'll nip Steve by 2 months, July 1958 for me. Glenn Davis (on the cover) winning the 440 at the NCAA ahead of Eddie Southern and Jack Yerman and setting a w-rec at 45.7.
But unlike Steve I have very few from the previous years. However, I do have the July 1956 issue - NCAA - AAU + Olympic Trials! A very special issue.

I coulda taken ya, but my parents would have to have been right on top of things, signing me up prior to me turning five months old . . .

          ;-)

Wow...some genuine titans here. As I've said before, I have subscribed since June 1968, and have every issue (actual hard copy!) except for 2 from early 1948. Around here, that makes me merely a middling-old timer...

I think I first subscribed in 1955 or 1956, but I let it lapse a couple of years later. I think my continuous sub starts around 1959 or 1960, but of course I later went back and bought the years I'd missed.

So... I'm #4, so far. I'd guess that in reality I'm more like #50. Lots of oldtimers (like me) don't like newfangled gadgets (e.g.computers). Lucky for me my wife likes tech stuff.

I checked my husband has every issue since May '69 and bound versions of
'57, '59, and '64. I think he also has a copy of the first issue and some other goodies. We met in '70 so don't know his subscription history. But he has told me the story of being a little boy in the boonies of Nevada wishing that there was a track magazine. When he finally saw it he thought he had died and gone to heaven.

And obviously this has been an off-limits discussion item ever since. What happened in Los Altos, stayed in Los Altos!

I am also early, but nowhere near the oldest. I started with the Dec. 1960 issue when I received a subscription as a gift. I had never heard of the publication before, but have stayed subscribed ever since. I lost a few issues through mishaps over the years. I remember leaving one on a plane once , but still have my nearly complete collection despite some minor complaints from my wife from time to time.

My first subscription started with February 1961, but I bought the bound volumes for 1960, 1959 and 1958, plus the Oly issues back to '48. My subscription lapsed in the late 60's, but I re-upped and bought the bound volumes for years I had missed. I had all the issues '58-'94 except for the 1964 Oly Trials issue, which somehow got lost, until I stupidly threw most of them out while preparing to move. Dumb. I must have been on acid or s.t. >:-)
                          Cheers,

I think the longest subscriber ever was Wilt Chamberlain.

                              good one

How much space does 50 years of magazines take up?
