Remember when Alan Page (defensive tackle for the Minnesota Vikings) took up running and ran one or more marathons? He was still in his playing days and he lost a lot of weight in the process and if I have the story right, the Vikes cut him because of the weight loss (1978), the Bears picked him up, and he proceeded to have one of the best years of his career (lighter, quicker). Now a Minnesota Supreme Court justice. His HOF page:

Didn't Said Aouita win the 5,000 at the 1984 Olympics and run the 800 at the 1988 Olympics as well as run the steeple and 10,000 at elite competition?

Don't forget that 12 years before he became the 10K WR setter Fernando Mamede ran on Portugal's 4x4 at the '72 Olympics (and ran 1:48 and 3:45 in Munich).

I think it's pretty cool that Nix, a former national champ at 400, is keeping fit and taking part in local road races and has not turned into a couch potato. I wonder if MJ, Carl Lewis, Larry Myricks, Greg FOster, etc., etc., still exercise regularly? I'd imagine lifelong exercise might be more of the distance runner's thing, but maybe a lot of sprinters do as well.

At last ! Someone responded to the subject of the thread ! Needless to say Sunder looked very fit and was out there having a good time and also running quite well.
(It was a great pleasure to move Eldrick's ranting to its own little hole)

    Sprinter to World XC Champ

Doris Severtsen began as a sprinter/hurdler/long jumper. Later, as Doris Brown, she was five times World Champion in cross country.

(Even later, as Doris Heritage, she coached men and women at Seattle Pacific University.)

read a story once, can't really confirm, but in some olympic games, a marathoner from paraguay was hard-pressed into the 4x100 team after someone else injured himself...

Lisa Martin now Onidieki[?sp] started as an intermediate hurdler and ran some very outstanding marathons including a silver medal in the 1988 OG.

Grazyna Syrek won her first national title in the 4x400 relay and eventually became a 2:26 marathon runner.

Fernando Mamede competed in the 1971 European championships in the 4x4 and went on to set a WR at 10000.

Remember Fred Sowerby. Supposed to have run the Commenwealth Games 5k as a youngster, then emerged as world class 400 runner eventually.
