  • US Drought in rankings

What is the event / events with the longest drought for a American being world ranked? Men? Women?

  • #2
Without looking, off the top of my head, I'm gonna say women's javelin and men's hammer (leaving out the walks and road races).

Kate the Great was the WR holder for a while, although not #1 ranked, so it at least had some "high points". It seems that Kriener might end up being ranked this year if she keeps cranking out ARs.

I would guess the longest current drought on the men's side is probably in the 10,000 going back to Todd Williams (mid '90s), or perhaps Bruce Bickford (late '80s). The hammer had Lance Deal ranking at least as recently as '97.

On the women's side, it probably is the javelin, and probably back to Karin Smith in the early to mid'80s.

I'd say it's gotta be the 20k walk.

I'd agree, but I was taking my cue from post #2:

Steeple 1994. Pretty hard to break into the top ten when the mean PR for the entire male population of Kenya is probably about 8:40.

Yup. Shows how much Croghan was often overlooked in favor of Kennedy, and Williams to a lesser degree.

Take a Kenyan shopkeeper or taxi driver, train him a couple of weeks, a couple of pointers on hurdling technique (a la Christopher Kosgei, early 1990s) and he'd probably break 9:00.

                          I thought the Kenyan taxi drivers were 3:50 milers: http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/discus ... 9476#69476

Last time a U.S. Woman ranked:

                            100, 200, 400, 800, 100H, 400H, Mar, HJ, PV, LJ, DT, HT, Hept all in '05.

                            Other events:
                            1500--'02
                            5K--'98
                            10K--'02
                            20W--never
                            TJ--'96
                            SP--'02
                            JT--'81

The fact that of the 7 in the "other" category, 3 are from '02 and 1 is from '98 is that there are U.S. women who get decent marks from time to time, and those stand them well in the non-WC/OG years, but when it comes to the other three years in the quadrennium we don't look so good.
