Any archivists out there who might be able to come up with this info?: What was Al Oerter's longest throw in 1955, and did it make the US all time top 10 as of the end of that year? It just occured to me that he's been on the US a-t top 10 for half a century. Is that remarkable, or what. But has it been 51 years?

I looked at a July '55 T&FN and found Al at 157' 1.25" on 5/28. Did not check any other T&FN issues other than World List at end of year, cited above.

T&FN published an all-time U.S. list (proably the first one ever?) booklet after the '54 season. Not quite what you wanted, I know, but... here's the top 10 then:
Gordien 194-6
Iness 190-0
O'Brien 184-1
Dillion 180-8
Fitch 180-2
Patterson 178-8
Frank 177-11
Koch 177-5
Doyle 175-6
Cannon 174-10
a 171-6 at that point would have been No. 20. (Bob Mathias was No. 15!)

Thanks! Anyway, 50y in top 10 is unreal. Now I'm wondering if Silvester might end up with a longer span... he was in alltime US top 10 in '58 or 59?, and who knows, he may still be there in 2008 or beyond. Anybody else have a longer US-top-10 tenure, in any event, than these guys?
