Dwayne Evans, third in the 1976 Olympic 200m as a high schooler, was mentioned on another thread. Were he and Johnny "Lam" Jones (from Lampasas, Texas), who was sixth in the 100, the last male high schoolers to make a U.S. Olympic or World Championship team? Names and events of the the last quarter century run together for me. Going back a way, there was Wykoff in 1928, Cornelius Johnson in 1932, Zamperini (and, from a source, not memory) Billy Brown, the triple jumper,in 1936; Mathias in 1948, Milton Campbell in 1952, Ryun and Lindgren in 1964, Reynaldo Brown and Casey Carrigan in 1968. I thought there was an unbroken string, but I don't think of anybody in 1956 or 1960 (or 1972). Dave Johnson can probably take us back before 1928. Meredith, I think, in 1912. Was Ralph Rose still at Healdsburg High in 1904?

What about Marty Liquori in 1968 or had he started his freshman year at Villanova?

Re: High School Olympians
Not a complete list, but it will have to do based on what resources I have in the office. Beginning with 1908, here are the athletes I can confirm as high schoolers who were named to the U.S. team:
1908, NONE
1912, Howard Drew (100), Ted Meredith (400, 800, 4x400), Harry Worthington (LJ), Larry Whitney (SP, SP both hands, DT);
1920, Ralph Hills (SP)
1924, Frank Hussey (4x100), Bill Cox (3000m team), Lee Barnes (PV)
1928, Frank Wykoff (100, 4x100), Sid Bowman (TJ)
1932, Corny Johnson (HJ)
1936, Lou Zamperini (5000), Billy Brown (TJ)
1948, Bob Mathias (Dec)
1952, Milt Campbell (Dec)
1956, NONE
1960, NONE
1964, Jim Ryun (1500), Gerry Lindgren (10,000, trials race was 9/12, following his senior year, but before he had enrolled in college)
1968, Reynaldo Brown (HJ), Casey Carrigan (PV)
1972, NONE
1976, Houston McTear (100, withdrew from team), Johnny Jones (100, 4x100), Dwayne Evans (200)
1980-2000, NONE

Re: High School Olympians
I can remember some notable Caribbean High Schoolers at the Olympics
Don Quarrie (Ja)'68 (felled by injury)
Ray Stewart (Ja) '84 (unbeaten until the 100 final) won the other semi-final
and more recently
Darrel Brown and Marc Burns (Tri) 4 x 1 medallists
There are some lesser lights who only excelled at Collegiate level after the olympics
Cathy Rattray, Jackie Pusey et al

Re: High School Olympians
Dave Johnson wrote, "Beginning with 1908, here are the athletes I can confirm as high schoolers who were named to the U.S. team." His list was impressive.
Let me add one more, Elizabeth Robinson who won the 1928 Olympic 100-meter dash at age 16. I think she was the youngest-ever USA Olympic champ.

Re: High School Olympians
What about Monique Henderson being named to the women's 4 x 4 team for the 2000 Olympics. She had just completed her junior year in high school.
Also, don't forget the Howard sisters (Sherri and Denean) who took first and third at the 1980 Oly Trials. Although, they didn't compete due to the US boycott, they qualified pure and simple. Also, don't forget Carol Lewis in the long jump who made the same ill-fated team.

Re: High School Olympians
"20-20 vision" responded to my brief comment about Betty Robinson of USA winning the Olympic Games 100 meters in 1928 by saying "There are many-many women who made the U.S. team as high schoolers but the original post here specified male team members." Is that a rebuke?
The original post (Title: High School Olympians) asked if Dwayne Evans and Johnny Jones were the last male high schoolers to make a make a U.S. Olympic or World Championship team. Subsequent reply messages then contributed peripheral content, e.g. listing first, not last, high schoolers.
Was my message inappropriate or offensive? If so, it appears I've had a "senior moment" and may be too old to contribute on the T&FN Historical Board.
