  • 1984 Olympic Marathon Trials

I've recently read a couple of articles that mentioned the '84 marathon trials. They make me wonder, What happened? Does anyone know the results beyond the first three? I only know Pfitzinger and Salazar made the team. Is there a website with the results of previous Olympic Trials?

Was there but can't seem to find anything by googling. Pfitzinger outkicked Salazar at the end. What you really have to find is a pic of the lead pack. Basically a who's who of US distance running of the eighties.

Look through the many pics on this web page and there are two or three from the 1984 trials.

”The Americans decided to repat their trial system of 1980 and scheduled a late spring race (May 26) on the gently downhill Buffalo-to-Niagra Falls Course...On This occassion, runners had the combined challeges of a headwind and high humidity, so times were slowed. Peter Pfitzinger (2:11:43) edged out Alberto Salazar by a single second, with John Tuttle behind by only another six seconds. Boston Marathon winner Greg Meyer had been favored, along with Bill Rodgers, but the two unfortunately finished seventh and eighth. The United States...had so many top marathon runners that the country could have fielded tow quality Olympic Teams.”
Fromn “The Olympic Marathon” by David E. Martin and Roger W.H. Gynn (2000).

Thanks for the list of the first 25 finishers. Would you happen to have the remaining finisher list for this marathon?

Can't seem to find it anywhere.

              Thanks!
